Introduction

The 2024 Safe Mobility Conference was held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on March 26 and 27, in partnership with the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill. This inaugural conference aimed to foster partnerships and collaborations among a diverse group of transportation stakeholders, including industry experts, academic researchers, and representatives from governmental agencies. Importantly, it provided an opportunity to build a foundation for future work that addresses traffic safety and mobility issues through comprehensive, effective, and empathetic approaches.

The 2024 Safe Mobility Conference Proceedings include abstracts and summaries from the three plenary sessions, as well as the eight technical sessions. Content highlights the multifaceted nature of transportation challenges and the innovative approaches being developed and deployed to achieve safe mobility.

Speakers for the three plenary sessions discussed what is safe mobility, why safe mobility is important, and how to achieve safe mobility. They also talked about challenges to achieve safe mobility, as well as solutions and best practices so we can move from a vision to reality. In addition, the diverse array of technical sessions covered multiple aspects of safe mobility, including various approaches to build the Safe System in communities, mobility solutions for people of all ages and abilities, equity in transportation, strategies for creating safe speeds, building a healthy traffic safety culture, leveraging in-vehicle technology to improve road safety, and fostering community ownership of road safety programs.
